Calaveras Needle Arts Guild
The
Calaveras Needle Arts Guild was started in 2005 by Susanne Bergum, owner of the
former EwePhoric Yarns in Arnold. Her vision was to gather the fiber arts
community together for social, educational, and philanthropic purposes.
The Guild, affiliated with The Knitting Guild Association (TKGA) and Crochet
Guild of America (CGOA) continues to increase its membership year over year.
Through
the Guild’s “EwePhoric Kids” Program, many children along the Highway 4 corridor
have learned to knit and crochet. Guild members volunteer time in local
schools to teach children a life-long skill. Needles and yarn are donated
to the program by the Guild and by The Helping Hands Foundation of The National
Needle Arts organization.
Literally
thousands of stitches have been lovingly assembled by the Guild members to
provide handmade items to various organizations. More than fifty lap robes
were donated to a care facility in San Andreas; catghans and toys have been
donated to The Calaveras Humane Society, both for sale and to accompany adoptees
home; chemo hats; and scarves and hats for Santa's
Express.
In 2011, the
Guild had its inaugural retreat in Plumas County now the home of founder and 1st
President, Susanne. Fifteen members traveled to Quincy, CA after a stop
Jimmy Bean’s Wool in Sparks, NV. The 3 days culminated in the completion
of many teddy bears which were forwarded to Mother Bear Project in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Traveling to Quincy, CA the knitters were also treated to going to the Wool Room, Quincy's local yarn shop. We are looking
forward to many more retreats which include lots of stitching, good food,
shopping and friendship.
